Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses’ Trauma Recovery Center (TRC):
- In 2016, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced the awarding of 2.6 million dollars to create 5 recovery centers in Ohio to provide crisis intervention to trauma victims
- Ohio is just the second state (following California) in the nation with this kind of network of Trauma Recovery Centers
- Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses is the only community organization/non-hospital recipient directly awarded
The purpose of the TRC Network:
- Access: We connect individuals to services, especially those living in under-served, vulnerable communities that may face barriers in accessing services or may not know that these services are even available to them
- Voice: Our services ensure that victims are not alone and don’t have to seek support on their own; they give victims a voice and help them to be more directive in their lives following victimization
- Forward-focused: We enable individuals to identify their strengths and utilize coping skills to sustain a new purpose driven life to overcome everyday challenges and look forward to the future
The TRC Team:
- 5-8 trained team members working in partnership with other organizations and within our larger organization to assist clients with specialized mental health and healthcare treatment as well as life skills counseling, education and training, food and other amenities (e.g. – clothing, and toiletries) as needed
- Sheila Nared, BSW | CDCA – Coordinator
- Other passionate team members –
- Janice Sowell, LPC (Counselor)
- Brandis Robinson (Advocate)
Our model:
- Many victims have been surrounded by violence all their lives. Like an onion effect, the TRC helps ‘peel the layers’ to allow healing
- The TRC helps victims identify their root causes of trauma and challenges and helps them address barriers to healing as well as prevent future victimization.
TRC services are offered to individuals with:
- Violent crime and domestic violence-related trauma
- Other violence-related trauma
- Acute and chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Low self-esteem
- Depression/anxiety
How the TRC works:
- The TRC receives referrals from the Cincinnati Police Departments, hospitals, and many other partners
- We contact and offer our services to those referred and those that walk in
- We document clients’ medical histories, history of violence, etc. to support care planning
- We create a Care Plan and implement the plan together
- We evaluate progress over time, making additional referrals to our partners as needed
Our partners:
- Saint Vincent DePaul
- Crime Survivors Safe & Just (CSSJ)
- AMOS
- Women Helping Women
- VOCA
- Cincinnati Police Department
- Green Dot
- United Way
- West End Art Gallery
- City Gospel Mission
- The Homeless Coalition
- San Diego TRC
Our reach:
- The TRC was established October 17, 2017
- In 2019, we engaged and supported 27 trauma outreach events, including our first Healing Vigil. We offered FREE counseling and crisis intervention to 33 community members and assisted 352 victims with mental health, legal citations, and substance abuse issues. Our team was able to connect 61 victims to vital programs around the Tri-State to help individuals with the healing process.
“Victims in under-served populations are in need of support networks to overcome barriers related to areas of homelessness, mental illness and more. Being in the moment gives opportunity to intervene and break the cycle of unaddressed trauma. It is our hope that the TRC program will ensure that victims get the assistance needed to be well adjusted in society and move from victims to victors.”
